This month marks the 90 years from the beginning of excavations at Teleilat Ghassul. The PBI in Jerusalem is organising a public lecture to mark this important anniversary.

The Legacy of Teleilat Ghassul. 90th
Anniversary Lecture.
Josef Mario Briffa
SJ
Tuesday 3rd December 2019, 16:00
Pontifical Biblical Institute, 3 Paul Emile Botta street, Jerusalem
On 24 November 1929, the Jesuit Fathers of the Pontifical Biblical Institute started their excavations at the site of Teleilat Ghassul. Their initial impetus was the academic debate on the location of Sodom and Gomorrah, but they soon found themselves uncovering an entirely new archaeological period – the Chalcolithic. The lecture will address the legacy of the excavation, particularly the excavation archive and archaeological collection, and its potential for further research.
Rev Dr Josef Mario Briffa SJ is a Jesuit father and an archaeologist. He is Director of the PBI Museum, and lectures in archaeology, ancient history and Bible at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and Jerusalem. He is also an active field archaeologist, currently a team member of The Lautenschläger Azekah Expedition.
