Multiplication (John 6,1-5)

Today’s Gospel speaks of the multiplication of the loaves and fish (John 6,1-15). The narrative clearly looks back to Elisha (2 Kings 4,42-44), and foreshadows the Eucharist — Jesus takes the bread, gives thanks, and distributes them to his disciples. Yet, I’m struck by two details.

Firstly, Philip, pragmatically realises that the resources are insufficient. It is easy to give up in the face of an overwhelming situation. Secondly, the bread and fish were the packed lunch that some young bloke had brought with him. Totally inadequate to feed a crowd, yet the miracle wouldn’t have happened without them, and without him. Applying that to our life of faith, we may feel totally inadequate, yet find ourselves in the midst of everyday miracles, when we are willing to give up our five loaves and two fishes.
