Fr Emmanuel Magri SJ (1851-1907), Jesuit priest, ethnographer, archaeologist is one of the pioneers of Maltese archaeology, and one of the leading figures in the collection of Maltese folktales and folklore. One of the members of the Committee for the Museum in 1903, he was entrusted with the excavation of the Hypogeum at Ħal Saflieni, sadly dying in Sfax (Tunisia) before bringing the site to publication. He is better known for his work on Maltese folklore, with his publication of Maltese proverbs (X’Jgħid il-Malti jew l-Għerf bla Miktub tal-Maltin), and five booklets of Maltese folktale (Ħrejjef Missirijietna).
Collected Papers
The project stated back in 2003, when I managed to track down some of Magri’s correspendence with the British Museum, on topics including the excavation of the Hypogeum. In recent years, this project has grown to include Magri’s work in Maltese, and published in Kotba tal-Mogħdija taż-Żmien.
